At the 2012 Truman Day Dinner, 2nd District Commissioner, Ann Schroeder, confessed her inspiration to run for the 109th state representative district. She’d been on the fence but when she discovered Paul Curtman’s plan to move into our area for the sole purpose of keeping his day job in Jeff City she decided to step up.

You see, because of redistricting Curtman found himself in the same district as fellow birther and conspiracy theorist, Majority Leader Tim Jones (R-Eureka). Had he tried to primary Jones, the newbie Curtman would have most certainly lost. So instead of doing the honorable thing and stepping aside he chose to change his address to keep those government paychecks rolling in. Seeing this blatant example of political opportunism being perpetrated on the county she treasures is what convinced Schroeder to fight back. Good for her.

But contemplate this: At the same time Curtman is busy taking up residency in our district for his own self-serving interests, he believes President Barack Obama is a Muslim interloper who has slipped into America from the outside for his own opportunistic and exploitative reasons. In fact, fear of the other is so horrifying to Curtman he’s wasted most of his freshman term pushing idiotic anti-Sharia Law legislation modeled by radical lawyer and white supremacist, David Yerushalmi. There’s so much hypocrisy here it makes my head hurt.

Ann’s too reserved to say so publicly but she shouldn’t be. Curtman is a carpetbagger and a hypocrite.

Congratulations to Darin Gilley for winning the 2012 Democrat of the Year award at last night’s Annual Truman Day Dinner. We had two excellent finalists this year but Darin edged Patricia Schuba of LEO to bring home the gold.

Readers of this site will recognize Darin’s name from the “Your Paycheck” labor blog. He’s worked on political campaigns and served as Rep. Mike Frame’s Treasurer. Darin has also worked with Jobs For Justice, the AFL-CIO, The Alliance for American Manufacturing, the Coalition for Labor Union Women and the UAW to fight the proposed Right-To-Work (for less) law in Missouri.

On a personal note, I hope some day to see Darin run for office. He’s got everything a viable candidate needs to win in this area. He’s passionate and well-spoken, he’s got mad people and public speaking skills, and has a large network of support. He is also unafraid to publicly stake out a position on topics he cares deeply about and unapologetically fight for those values. There’s nothing Republican-Lite about Darin.

But maybe most importantly, he’s sane. That wouldn’t be a factor in ordinary times but because the current crop of GOP lawmakers in Jeff City embrace every paranoid conspiracy theory that lands in their inbox it’s a characteristic that is sadly in short supply these days.

Way to go, Darin! You’ve earned it and have a bright political future ahead of you.

From Otto Fajen’s report:

GOOD JOBS FIRST ACT
The House Economic Development Committee will hear HB 1571 (Jeanette Mott Oxford D-59) on April 24. The bill establishes the Good Jobs First Act which substantially increases the accountability and reporting requirements for all state development subsidies to corporations. The bill limits development subsidies to those creating jobs with good salaries within the state at a cost to the state of no more than $35,000 per job. The Association supports the bill.

I came into possession of a political pamphlet written in 1950 by Gerald L. K. Smith titled Too Much and Too Many Roosevelts. After his death in 1945, FDR’s sons aspired to enter public life with the encouragement of their mother, Eleanor, who evidently struck fear into the hearts of conservatives.

Smith beautifully demonstrates how the kooky and paranoid right-wing conspiracies we hear today are just variations on longstanding themes. At that time, it was Mrs. Roosevelt who was cast as the power-hungry antagonist with evil intent, which makes sense since strong women with ideas of their own must have been as much a threat to the white, male psyche then as Barack Obama is today.

As you read the following passage replace “female” with “black” and “Russians” with “Muslims” and it’s something that could have been written yesterday on any number of conservative blogs …

What we need is less government regulation and more deep-sea drilling …

While the true extent of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill was not known for about 4 years, as Al Jazeera notes in the video above, the repercussions of BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf of Mexico may become apparent more quickly.

Discovering eyeless shrimp, lesioned fish and other mutated and underdeveloped seafood, fisherman in the Gulf are pointing fingers at the BP spill. Biologist Dr. Darryl Felder told the news agency that Gulf seafood populations are dropping at alarming rates and that species richness is “diminished.”

The Gulf Restoration Network‘s Scott Eust explained the bizarre shrimp deformities. “We have some evidence of deformed shrimp, which is another developmental impact. So, that shrimp’s grandmother was exposed to oil while the mother was developing, but it’s the grandchild of the shrimp that was exposed grows up with no eyes.”

Another fine example of “intelligent beings that know how to manage things.”

Notice the encroachment on educators’ and citizens’ local management of their schools by legislators who are supposed to be wanting small government leaving citizens our freedom. Who’s saying “Don’t Tread On Me” now?

Missouri NEA Legislative Update
Week 15, No. 3, April 18, 2012

SENATE PREPARES TO DEBATE ANOTHER OMNIBUS EDUCATION BILL
The Senate is expected to debate a revised version of SCS/SB 706 (Jane Cunningham) on April 19. Sen. Cunningham assured the General Laws Committee that she would prepare a floor substitute version of the bill that will not contain a tax-credit style voucher program regarding students in unaccredited districts. However, the substitute may change the probationary period for teachers from five years to ten years and include many other harmful provisions.

SCS/SB 706 currently includes numerous provisions regarding unaccredited districts, including a tax-credit style voucher for students of unaccredited districts to attend private schools and authority for other districts or district cooperatives to operate charter schools in unaccredited districts. The bill also includes authority for State Board intervention in unaccredited districts and provisions to re-establish local control regarding enrollment of non-resident students from unaccredited districts under the Turner vs. Clayton decision.

The Association strongly opposes several provisions in the bill, including those relating to tax credit vouchers, charter school expansion and transfer of local funds to the state. The Association also opposes changes to damage the fair dismissal procedure for teachers under the tenure law.

Missouri NEA Legislative Update,
Week 15, No. 1, April 16, 2012
By Otto Fajen, MNEA Legislative Director

VOTER ID
The Senate Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions and Ethics Committee will hear HCR 53 (Shane Schoeller) on April 17. The HCR would attempt to authorize new ballot summary language to replace the ballot summary of SJR 2, a joint resolution already approved by the legislature. SJR 2, if approved by votes, would authorize the legislature to require government issued ID for voters. The ballot summary language from SJR 2 was recently rejected as defective by a Missouri court. Missouri NEA believes voting is a constitutional right that should not be restricted by unnecessary voter photo identification requirements or other additional barriers to the voting franchise.

Who was it that said: “No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.” One source says: Judge Gideon J. Tucker, 1866. Regardless, it does seem true. As an example see the article in Fired Up!

THE GOOD NEWS IS: Only about 2 weeks to go.

Article III of the Missouri Constitution establishes when the General Assembly is to meet. Section 20 of Article III states that the General Assembly shall convene its regular session on the first Wednesday after the first Monday in January of each year. Section 20 requires the General Assembly to adjourn its regular session by May 30th.

And, by the way, House and Senate resume today at 4 pm, as usual, less to do business than to get paid for a full day while doing a few hours of getting settled for the next day…

THE BAD NEWS IS: Education and all else is at risk of being damaged by legislation!

The Obama campaign has marked the sixth anniversary of Romenycare with this video featuring John McDonough, who helped craft the health care reform law in Massachusetts, along with Jonathan Gruber, before heading to Washington to help President Obama pass a similar version — individual mandate and all.

The main differences between the two laws are, Romneycare covers abortion and includes a requirement that an advisory panel appoint one member from Planned Parenthood. It also increases access to healthcare for illegal immigrants. Obamacare doesn’t do any of those things.

This list of translations that State Rep. Donna Lichtenegger (R-Jackson) posted on her Facebook wall last week was meant as humor but it provides a disturbing glimpse into the warped authoritarian mindset that currently infests our state capitol. Sure, if confronted they’ll roll their eyes and tell you to, “lighten up,” and criticize you for not being able to take a joke. But what makes this list so funny for them is that they believe that it’s all true. That’s how comedy generally works. But the only way they can publicly express what they actually believe without exposing themselves as bigots, racists and goons, is to couch it within the safety of a joke.
